How to Design Desk Clocks

A desk clock is a functional piece that complements the décor of the home or office.  Many people purchase a digital or analog clock mechanism and design a display around the face of the clock.  The display can be made from wood, glass, plastic, and many more materials.

  • Look at the different clock assemblies available for purchase over the Internet or in hobby stores.  Choose a digital readout display made with led lights, or consider the analog style with hands to represent minutes and hours.  It is helpful to acquire the clock before designing the case so that the design compensates for the size and shape of the clock.  Many bare bones clocks feature different faces and finishes to make your project look unique.

  • Decide which types of materials will work the best to carry out your design ideas.

  • Sketch a basic design and add details such as dimensions, instructions, and ornamental motifs.  Consider sketching a real life sized sketch of the projects so that you will have a customized blueprint of your idea to use as a guide throughout your design.

  • Design a sturdy base so the clock will stand up without tipping over easily on a busy desk.

  • Add design elements such as chimes, mirrors, and special glass that enhance the intricacy of the clock.

  • Base the complexity of the design on several factors including who will build the clock, if the clock design is intended for mass production, as a hobby kit, or as a personal project.
