How to Sew Lined Window Valances

Sewing a simple lined valance is a great project for a beginning seamstress.  You can use one to decorate a small kitchen or bathroom window and they are super easy to make.  Consider adding a level of visual interest by using contrasting fabrics for the front and lining, or if you would like an insulated valance, use flannel.

You Need

  • Fabric for the front and back (contrasting if you choose)

  • Curtain Rod

  • Ruler, Scissors

  • Sewing machine and thread

  • Disappearing ink marker

  1. Measure the window’s width and height, measuring the height from the curtain rod to the sill. Cut the fabric for the front and lining so it measures 1/6 the window height + 6 inches X twice the window's width + 2 inches.  For example, if your window measures 24' W x 48” H, the fabric measurements should be 50 inches x 14 inches.

  2. Fold the short side of the fabric over to the wrong side and press. Fold over another half-inch and press again. Pin in place. Repeat with the opposite side. Stitch the hem along the edge on both sides.

  3. Put the lining fabric on top of the front fabric. Pin together on the two long sides and stitch in place leaving a half-inch seam allowance on each side. Turn the fabrics right side out.

  4. Measure the diameter of your curtain rod and double. Measure from the top of the fabric and note the location. For example, if your curtain rod measures 1½ inches, then you should mark the fabric three inches down.

  5. Sew a line of stitches horizontally across the curtain, using your mark as a guide. This will make a casing at the top of the valance that will slide onto your curtain rod.

  6. Sew the short sides closed, starting at the bottom of the casing and stitching to the bottom of the valance.  It’s important that you start at the casing and not at the top, or you will sew the curtain rod slot closed.
