Materials for Making Window Valances

A valance is the short piece of a curtain that reaches across both sides of a window. Making a window valance is a simple task when using the appropriate items needed. All sorts of fabrics can be used to create a window valance, including chiffon, cotton, and even the finest silk.

These are the most essential materials needed to make your own window valance by itself or to go with a set of curtains.

Fabric

Going to a craft store and getting some fabric in small doses is the first step. It can be from a fine material such as silk of stain, or something a little more standard and cheaper like cotton, chiffon, and even lace. Make sure you get the right measurements of your windows before seeking out the length of the fabric needed.

Wood

Wood is needed to hold the valance up in place. It should be a small piece that is the same length of your fabric. If desired, you can paint it the same color as the valance or the wall to camouflage it.

Stapler and Pliers

A household stapler has to be used to staple the wood in place with the fabric so the valance will stay in place. Pliers can be used to twist the nails in case they are loose. If they get loose in the future, keep pliers on hand to tighten them so the valance does not fall.

Pencil and Tape Measurer

A pencil is used for measuring. Measuring the space of the window and mark the wall lightly with the pencil. The type of tape measurer used can be an ordinary household one that you can purchase at depot stores.

These are the basic materials needed in order to create a window valance. If you want a highly decorated one, you can purchase beading and other decorations at a crafting store.
