How to Transfer a Cable Service

When you move from your house or apartment to another you need to transfer all of your services to the new address.  Sometimes the move is temporary and other times the move is permanent.  Transferring your cable television and Internet service is one of the chores you need to complete in order to maintain service at your new address.

  • Find the phone number for your cable service provider.  Call the provider to discuss your current service and whether your services are offered at your new address.  It is important to note whether there will be a fee for transferring the service.  Some companies charge a fee to transfer services.

  • Plan a date and time for the cable provider to come to your new home to connect the cable to your new home.  Some homes do not have cable already connected to the house, therefore a cable installer will have to visit your new home to connect the cable.  If the new home has to be connected to cable, you may be charged an installation fee.

  • Choose a date to carry-over the service from the old address to the new address so that you avoid any interruptions in your service. When you plan head of time to transfer the service on a particular date then you will ensure that your service is on and available the same day that you move to your new home.

  • Prepare ahead of time if your move is temporary instead of permanent.  Contact the cable provider and tell them the dates that you need service at the temporary home.  Many cable providers allow their customers to transfer their cable service from one home to another more than twice a year.  This makes it possible for you to transfer the service to your temporary residence.
