How to Wind Chime Clocks Correctly

Chime clocks are clocks that chime or play music on the hour, half hour or quarter hour. Chime clocks can be mantle clocks, wall clocks or standing clocks such as a grandfather clock. For a chime clock to keep time properly it must be wound manually. The process of correctly winding a chime clock is simple, and will ensure the clock always displays the accurate time.

What You’ll Need

  • Chime clock

  • Small level

  • Key included with the chime clock

  1. Ensure your clock is hanging level by checking the side and top of the clock with a small level.

  2. Decide on a regular schedule for winding your clock and try to stick to it. If you have an 8-day clock, you will need to wind it every seven days. Choose a day of the week and wind it the same day every week. Other clocks may need to be wound more or less often but should be on a regular schedule as well, however do not wind your chime clock too frequently.

  3. Wind your chime clock before it stops. Make sure your winding schedule allows for a little give in time so your clock does not stop before you get a chance to wind it.

  4. Move the hands clockwise if any changes need to be made to the time.

  5. Turn the winding key in a slow, even manner until it does not turn any more. Do not force the key any further once it feels tight.

  6. Push your pendulum lightly if the clock stopped before you had a chance to wind it. This will get the clock going again.
