Programs in Veterinary Science

When most people think of veterinary science, they most likely immediately think of their local veterinarian that cares for their dog. However, the field of veterinary science is much broader than this. Those who choose to pursue a career in the veterinary science field have many programs from which to choose.

Veterinarian

The term veterinarian is very broad and can cover a wide range of types of veterinarians.  Most common are small animal veterinarians who specialize in companion animals such as dogs, cats, hamsters and gerbils. Large animal veterinarians are also usually known for their work with livestock and horses. Those specializing in exotic animal medicine may attend to reptiles, exotic birds and small mammals such as ferrets, rabbits and chinchillas.

Wildlife Medicine

This type of veterinary science practice is relatively new. Veterinarians focus on wildlife and may work closely with zoologists and conservation medicine practitioners. In times of natural disasters, wildlife medicine specialists may treat animals in need.

Food Safety

Some veterinarians specialize in a program that allows them to work in the food industry or government to oversee handling, preparation, and storage of food to prevent foodborne illness. They may be responsible for examining animals before slaughter and ensuring that carcasses are disease free or inspecting facilities for cleanliness and contamination.

Laboratory Animal Caretaker

These caretakers work in universities or industrial laboratories providing care and treatment for laboratory animals (commonly pigs, dogs, cats, or rodents). Laboratory workers are also responsible for ensuring that animals are treated ethically and humanely.

Veterinary Technician

Vet techs often assist a veterinarian during a procedure. They are generally responsible for preparing and taking samples, performing laboratory tests, and cleaning and sterilizing instruments and equipment.
