What are the Most Common Chimney Problems?

A chimney is usually not given much thought until a problem arises. Knowing some of the more common chimney problems and how to fix them can be a big help. Providing proper maintenance and checkups for your chimney can help you to spot issues before they are able to cause damage.

  • Smoke comes back into the house instead of going up the chimney. If you have already checked to be sure that the damper is open, the problem could be dirt and soot in the flue. Having it cleaned or cleaning it yourself will usually take care of the problem. Scheduling a regular yearly cleaning will prevent dirt and soot from accumulating again. One other thing that may cause this problem is using firewood that has not been aged, always be sure to only wood that has aged for a year.

  • Water leaking down into your attic. The water may or may not reach your ceiling, but either way it is a problem. This is caused by weak and cracked mortar. Before the problem has a chance to get worse, have the mortar between the bricks repaired and replaced. This can be done yourself or hire a professional.

  • Rain getting into the chimney and coming down. You are most likely needing a chimney cap. This can also prevent animals from getting in and living in your flue. A chimney cap is easy to install and is inexpensive.

  • Cracked bricks or bricks that fall. This is caused by the bricks absorbing water during rain and snow, then the bricks freeze and thaw, which causes cracking. An easy solution for this problem is to apply water proofing around the outside of the chimney. This keeps water from being absorbed, so the freezing and thawing is stopped.
