Wood Stove Installation Methods
If you want to install a wooden stove in your home, it is important that you vent it properly. The method you choose to vent your home can depend on the type of home that you have. Two of the most common venting methods are vertical venting and horizontal venting.
Vertical Venting
One of the most common methods for venting a wood stove is to install a vertical vent pipe. In this method of venting the vent pipe is run from the top of the wood burning stove and out through the ceiling and roof of the building. In order to vent a stove this way, the vent pipe must be installed a minimum of nine inches away from combustible materials and any walls. Additionally, to help protect the ceiling and roof from heat a heat resistant collar should be used as well. One of the downsides to venting a stove in this manner is that if the pipe isn’t sealed properly leaks may occur.
Horizontal Venting
Horizontal venting is when you run the stove pipe out through a wall of the building instead of the having the pipe run through the ceiling. To help protect the walls from heat, a heat resistant collar should be used and the vent pipe should be angled slightly to encourage any hot air to travel through it. This method is often easier than vertical venting because there is less of a chance for moisture leaks should the hole in the wall not be properly sealed.
