Famous Concrete Designs
Concrete has been used to construct buildings for a very long time. Concrete is very durable and has been used in many famous architectural designs. Most designers like using concrete because you can make it in almost any shape imaginable.
The Roman Pantheon
This structure is the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. Originally built in 27 B.C., the domes peek reaches 142 feet. The designers were able to reduce the domes weight with a honeycomb system they developed. This helped tremendously because it lightened the pressure on the overall structure a lot. The dome also has 140 sunken panels on the inside. In 126 A.D., the dome was rebuilt and still stands today.
Sagrada Família
This church was built in Barcelona, Spain. Antoni Gaudi designed this church with a mixture of Gothic and modern details using concrete. This building is still under construction even though it was dedicated in 1882. There are plans in place to construct a concrete staircase decorated with false gods and demons.
Casa Batllo
Antoni Gaudi also designed this building in Barcelona, Spain. This concrete building was constructed in 1877 and renovated in 1904. Lots of curving designs are in this building including the roof and staircase. The building is also famous for having irregular oval windows.
Guggenheim Museum
This museum was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. This was his last design but certainly one of his best. The art is displayed on a spiral wall that goes from the first floor to top floor. The building exterior was renovated in 2005.
