How to Build Surround Sound Speakers
Surround sound speakers are a set of five speakers and a subwoofer that are set up around you. This creates an environment where you are literally surrounded by sound. This creates a better sound system, and it is an easy system to build.
Items Needed:
- A woofer
- A tweeter
- 3/4-inch birch plywood
- A crossover
- Some PVC pipe
- A hack saw
- A power drill
- Circular saw attachment
- Wood glue
- A screwdriver
- Wood screws
- Clamps
- Silicone caulk
- Acoustic foam
- Speaker wire
- A connection terminal
- Sandpaper
- Paint or stain
- Use a saw to cut your plywood panels to size. The bottom pieces should measure 4.5 inches by 4 inches. The sides should measure 4 inches by 8.5 inches, and the front and back should measure 6 inches by 8 inches.
- Put together the side, top and bottom panels. Make sure that they fit before you use wood glue to glue them into place.
- Use a drill and saber saw to cut out the back panel. This is where your connection terminal will go. Use 1-inch wood screws in all four corners to make sure that everything is secured.
- Draw a 4.5-inch circle on the bottom of your front panel for both the speakers and the port. Draw 1 1/4-inch and 3/4-inch diameter circles above this larger circle.
- Apply a small bead of silicon caulk to the interior joints of your cabinet. Allow 10 to 12 hours for the caulking to dry.
- Glue sound absorbing material to the interior surfaces.
- Glue your PVC pipe to the back of your front panel.
- Attach both the tweeter and the woofer to your front panel with a thin bead of caulking.
- Attach your 12-gauge speaker wire from the terminal cup to the crossover, and then from the crossover to both the tweeter and the woofer.
- Glue and screw your front panel into place.
- Fill in any holes where your countersunk screws are located with wood putty. Allow them to dry before hand sanding the whole surface and painting or staining it.
