How to Clean a Cast Iron Fireplace Cover

If you have a cast iron fireplace cover or screen, then you know the beauty and durability that a cast iron fireplace cover can provide. However, like any metal surface it will need to be properly cared for and maintained in order for it to maintain its beauty.

  1. Prepare your workspace by laying down a large garbage bag on your lawn, driveway or indoors on your floor depending on the outside temperature where you live.

  2. Bring your cast iron fireplace cover to your work area, and place it on the plastic bags that you have laid down on the floor, lawn or driveway.

  3. Use a clean and dry towel to gently wipe down that surface of your cast iron fireplace cover. You want to remove as much of the loose dirt, ashes and debris from the surface as you can.

  4. Use a plastic spatula to remove any stubborn stuck-on ash or debris that has collected on the surface of your cast iron fireplace cover.

  5. Sprinkle salt on the surface of your cast iron fireplace cover so that the entire surface is coated in a thin layer of salt.

  6. Apply lemon juice on top of the layer of salt so that it is dampened, but not wet enough to rinse off of the surface of the cast iron fireplace cover.

  7. Use a scouring pad to scrub the surface of your cast iron fireplace cover to remove any remaining dirt, grease or ash that remains on the cover, restoring it to its beautiful finish.

  8. Rinse your fireplace cover with clean water to remove the lemon juice and salt from the surface.

  9. Dry the surface of your cast iron fireplace cover thoroughly to ensure that all moisture is removed before replacing it in front of the fireplace.
