How to Clean a Metal Chimney
Metal chimneys are still very useful in today’s society, especially to those who still operate wooden stoves or heaters. These are made from corrosion-resistant steel and are meant to last for years. Metal chimneys, just like a masonry chimney, will collect soot and other dirt, so these need to be cleaned regularly. When not cleaned properly, it can create devastating fires.
Things You’ll Need:
- Small shovel
- Galvanized bucket
- Ladder
- Chimney brush
- Rope or chimney brush handle
- Position the bucket outside the opening of the metal chimney and any surrounding areas where debris may fall. Use a small shovel to remove any ash and unburned wood. Take a ladder and place it accordingly for easy access to the metal chimney on the roof.
- Make the chimney brush by attaching the brush handle to one end of the brush. If you are using ropes, then thread the rope through the top look of the brush. Once the brush is in the center of the rope, tie a knot to secure its place.
- Climb onto the ladder with the brush. Remove the chimney cap to access the metal chimney, but only if it has one.
- Insert the brush into the metal chimney and push it to the bottom with slow and even strokes. Pull the brush back to the top and repeat the process several times. If you are using a rope on the brush, then drop one end of the rope into the metal chimney and let it drop to the bottom. You will have to climb down the ladder to pull the brush down the chimney and then go back up on the ladder to pull the brush back to the top.
- Repeat the cleaning process several times until you feel confident that the metal chimney is thoroughly cleaned.
