How to Remove Road Salt From Car Mats

How to Get Salt Out of Car Mats

If you live in an area that gets lots of snow, then it is likely that salt is used to dissolve the snow. When you walk over the salt, it can easily get on the car mats in your car. The salt should be cleaned from the mats to remove the hard deposits.

Materials Needed

  • Vacuum with hose attachment

  • Bucket

  • Hot water

  • Mild liquid dish soap

  • White distilled vinegar

  • Scrub brush

  • Garden hose

  • Towel

  1. Take the car mats out of the car. Shake each mat to remove any loose debris from them. This will make some of the cleaning a little easier and remove much of the salt.

  2. Place the mats on a flat surface. Put a hose attachment on the vacuum and turn on the vacuum. Vacuum the mats thoroughly to remove the dirt that is deep in the fibers.

  3. Fill a bucket with 1-gallon hot water. Add 3 tablespoons of mild liquid dish soap to the bucket. Pour in 1 cup white distilled vinegar. Place a scrub brush into the bucket and swish it around to mix the liquids.

  4. Use the cleaning solution and a scrub brush to thoroughly clean the car mats. Use circular motions on tough stains. Turn on the garden hose and rinse the soaps from the car mats.

  5. If the car mats are plastic, dry them with a towel and allow them to further dry by air. If the car mats are made of any other material, hang them up in the sun so they can dry by air. Replace the car mats inside the car once they are completely dry.
