How to Install Installation a Wood Stove Metal Chimney

A wood burning stove has to have a chimney.  The chimney will allow the smoke and fumes to exit the home and go outside.  Installing a chimney requires some tools and carpentry skills.  There are a few steps to follow when installing a chimney for your wood burning stove.

Items needed

  • power driver

  • screwdriver

  • tape measure

  • Sawzall

  • wood stove pipe

  • 3 inch screws

  • roof caulking

  • hammer

  • sealant

  • flashing nails

  • chimney cap

  • storm collar

  • flashing

  • support box

  1. Use the tape measure and measure how far it is from the wood burning stove chimney pipe to the wall or ceiling.  The clearance for pipes varies by size of the pipe.  Single wall pipe clearance is usually 18 inches.  Double wall pipe clearance is as low as six inches.

  2. Fit the first section of the pipe to the flume outlet.  The flume outlet is located on the back of the wood burning stove.  This outlet allows the fumes to go from the stove to the chimney.  Slide the pipe over the flume outlet.  Using a screwdriver attach three screws along the edge of the seam.  This will fasten the pipe to the collar.  There will be at least two inches of overlap.  Three screws will have to be placed on all joints.

  3. Put the first 90 degree elbow joint to the back of the stove and point the chimney pipe upward toward the ceiling.  Then slide the pipe and joint together.  Attach using the screws.  Put the remaining pipe pieces together and point toward the ceiling.

  4. Place the support box on the ceiling or wall.  It will be where the chimney exits to the outside.  Using a pencil trace around the support box.  Lay the support box off to the side.  Use a Sawzall and cut out the outline.  Remove the drywall.

  5. Put the last piece of pipe into the support box.  Secure with screws.  All the chimney pipe pieces should be together and secured with the attachment screws.

  6. Cut a hole in the roof boards using a Sawzall.  Run the chimney pipe upward to the ceiling.  Put the support box on top of the pipe.  Install the support box between the roof joist with screws.   Run the rest of the pipe through the support box and out the roof.

  7. Put chimney flashing on the pipe at the top of the roof.  Using screws attach the storm collar and chimney cap to the end of the pipe.

  8. Use flashing nails and a hammer to attach the flashing to the roof.  Seal with caulking along the edges.
