How to Install Surround Sound
When you have surround sound speakers hooked up to your television set, you will think that you are at the movie theatre. Surround sound encircles the room and comes at you from all directions. You can easily learn how to install surround sound and complete the project in one afternoon.
Items Needed:
- Surround sound speaker system
- Templates
- Measuring tape
- Cardboard (optional)
- Pencil (optional)
- Masking tape
- Level
- Drill and drill bit
- Stiff wire
- Utility knife
- Wire strippers
- Speaker connectors
- Screws
- Screwdriver
- Determine the best location in the room to mount the speakers. Select a spot above the television set for the center speaker. Select a spot 5 to 10 feet from each side of the television set and 38 to 42 inches up from the floor to mount the left and right speakers. Select an area behind the seating arrangement, between 5 and 7 feet up from the floor, to mount the surround speakers.
- Look in the speaker box for templates. If you don’t have any templates, make your own by measuring the dimensions of the speakers and drawing out the measurements on cardboard.
- Tape the templates to the desired locations on the wall with masking tape.
- Level and measure each template carefully so that they are straight on the wall.
- Drill a tiny hole in the middle of each template and insert a stiff wire into the hole. Twist the wire around inside the hole to make sure there are no obstacles that will interfere with the speaker.
- Cut around each template with a utility knife and lift out the piece of drywall.
- Strip the speaker wire, add speaker connectors and attach the connectors to the back of the speakers.
- Position the speakers inside the hole and screw the frame and speakers to the wall.
