How to Set Up Sound Equipment for a Band
Playing music for a live venue is exciting and exhilarating. However, it also involves a lot of seting up. Setting up sound equipment for a band includes setting up the amplifiers, speakers, microphones and instruments. Setting up does not have to be hard or complicated.
- Place the speakers first. The band speakers should ideally be at least 5 feet from the microphones. If the speakers are too close, you will have feedback. The speakers should also be far enough apart to evenly distribute the sound to your audience.
- Set up the band instruments. This will vary depending on what the band members play. You may have a guitar, bass, keyboard or drums. Each instrument needs to be connected to a speaker with a cable. If you have more that one of a certain instrument, it is best to plug one in to each speaker to even out the sound.
- Position the microphones. You will need to set up the microphones for the lead and backup singers. These will also need to get plugged into the speakers via cables. If you have a drum in your set, you will also need a drum microphone since the drum is not connected to an amplifier or speaker. Place the drum microphones in front of the drum set. For optimum sound, use one for your kick drum and another microphone hanging above the drum set.
- Test your sound equipment. Plus in the instruments and microphones and check them all one at a time. Adjust the speakers so that the sound is good and you do not have any feedback. Once you have tested each piece individually, you can test the sounds together as a band.
