How to Paint Brass Fireplace Tools

Brass fireplace tools are common in many homes, but over the years the use of brass for home decor has fell out of favor. Fortunately, brass fireplace tools can be easily transformed into a updated modern look with a few easy steps.

Items Needed

  • Ammonia

  • Water

  • Fine Grit Sand Paper

  • Clean Cloth

  • Spray Primer

  • Spray Paint

  • Spray Polyurethane

  1. Clean the fireplace tools with equal parts of water and ammonia to remove any dirt and debris. Dirt and debris will keep the paint from adhering to the tools.

  2. Sand the tools with fine grit sand paper. Sanding smooth surfaces such as brass allows the paint to adhere to the surface better.

  3. Remove the sanding dust from the fireplace tools with a clean, damp cloth. Allow the tools to dry.

  4. Spray the tools with a spray primer made for slick surfaces. Use slow, even sweeping motions to fully cover the surface of the tools. Allow the primer to dry.

  5. Spray the fireplace tools with spray paint. Spray paint is available in a variety of colors and finishes. Spray paint is also available in textured finishes like rock, wrought iron and metallic.

  6. Allow the spray paint to dry. You can apply a second coat if necessary.

  7. Spray the tools with polyurethane. A coat of polyurethane will add a clear, protective layer to the tools. This layer will protect the paint from chips and scratches.

  8. Allow the polyurethane to dry for 24 hours before using the fireplace tools.
