How to Reduce the Risks of Congestive Heart Failure

If you are concerned about congestive heart failure, you can reduce your risk by eating foods that are low fat and low sodium.  Also, quit smoking and keep blood pressure in an acceptable range.  Exercise helps keep your heart healthy as well, and should be performed at least two times a week.

  • Limit the amount of sodium and fat in your diet to reduce the risk of congestive heart failure.  Foods that contain these items put extra stress on your heart.  Avoid fried foods, butter, whole milk, and fatty meats to maintain heart health.  Consider eating foods that are healthy for you like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains instead.

  • Quit smoking because this puts you at a much higher risk for heart failure.  Purchase items like the nicotine patch to stop smoking, or consult with your doctor about medicines that are prescribed to help with quitting.

  • Decrease the use of alcohol to maintain heart health.  Excess alcohol is unhealthy and puts much stress on the heart.  Drink no more than two or three alcoholic drinks in a week for the best health.

  • Reduce high blood pressure to reduce the risk of congestive heart failure.  Blood pressure needs to be maintained at a normal level so your heart is not overworked. Check blood pressure often and discuss medicines with your doctor to help reduce high blood pressure.

  • Exercise regularly to keep your heart healthy.  Consider exercises like walking, biking, and running for the best health.  This exercise strengthens heart muscles, reduces weight, and lowers blood pressure.  Exercise at least two times a week for the greatest benefits.
