How to Store a Utility Trailer

For proper storage of a utility trailer, clean the trailer thoroughly and make sure tires are filled with the correct air pressure.  Also, store your trailer in an enclosed structure covered in a tarp to keep it from getting damaged.

Items Needed:

  • Automotive soap

  • Sponge

  • Hose

  • Tire gauge

  • Air pump

  • Zip tie

  • Wood or bricks

  • Tarp

  • Bungee cords

  1. Clean the outside of the trailer thoroughly making sure all dirt and debris is removed. Use automotive soap and a sponge for proper cleaning.  Make sure to clean the entire area of the trailer, including the tires.  Rinse the trailer once it has been cleaned using a hose.

  2. Fill trailer tires with air making sure they contain the recommended air pressure as printed on the tires.  Check air pressure with a tire gauge, and fill tires with air using an air pump until the correct pressure is reached.  This is important to keep tires in good condition while the trailer is stored.

  3. Wrap up any loose wires attached to your trailer, and secure them with a zip tie. This keeps wires from getting damaged or worn.

  4. Place your trailer in a garage or other enclosed structure, and put pieces of wood or bricks behind tires to keep the trailer from moving.

  5. Cover your trailer with a tarp and secure the cover with bungee cords.  Make sure the entire area of the trailer is covered.  This is important so dirt and water do not get on the trailer during storage.
