How and why you should use a rangefinder

How and why you should use a rangefinder when hunting with your crossbow that's this episode of death by Bungie range finders are pretty simple pieces of equipment there's not a lot to it but there are a few little tips I'll share with you in this video and at the end of this video I'm gonna show you why it's so important to use a rangefinder when you're out in the field hunting no matter how long you've been hunting with archery equipment no matter how long you've been hunting with a crossbow you still should use a rangefinder you should still use that as a tool it's a very valuable tool you should still use it to establish yardages don't go based on guessing and don't go based on experience and all that sort of thing I have the Bushnell Scout 1000 arc DX very good little rangefinder I've had this for a couple of years now it's worked very well for me before that I had a Cabela's model that worked great too it just got to the point where it wasn't working even if I put new battery in a couple things to pay attention to when you are buying your rangefinder look at the magnification this one is a 6 X zoom that's an awful lot of magnification for hunting up-close with archery equipment like we do 6 X's that means it's going to be magnified 6 times it's 6 by 21 the 6 refers to that level of magnification that means it might be a little bit tough to look through here and locate the item that you're trying to hone in on. Best Rangefinders for Golf it's blowing it up so far on the other hand they're coming out west and looking clear across a canyon trying to get arangefinderon a slope on the other side 500 yards away something like that that 6 X magnification can be pretty handy because it can help you locate that one particular rock or that animal or whatever you're looking for to make sure that you have that yardage accurately so 6 X magnification is pretty handy I have found that 6 X magnification however is pretty useful around here that 6 times magnification it's pretty useful around here because I can use this to look through the viewfinder and use it almost like a set of binoculars it allows me to blow up things and see things a little bit better if I see a doe coming into the food plot I can use this to see if it is a button buck or make sure it's a doe. Check:Best budget golf rangefinder I want to look at now it's true you can use the crossbow for that same purpose I can use the crossbow to zoom in and look but then you've got a lot more movement when you're move crossbow around a crossbow scope in addition to that doesn't have as much magnification my crossbow scope is only two times magnification instead of the six times that this one has a bunch of different models of these things they range from 150 dollars up to 900 dollars somewhere in that range when I looked at them I don't know of a reason why I would want the $900 model but you might you want to take a look at those 150 dollar range that lower end expensive range 150 dollars hunting is not cheap that's for sure but a good range finder is a good investment it certainly is gonna make your life a lot better having the $150 range though has suited me just fine for the purposes of finding yardages and for the purposes that I use the range finder for so from my experience you want to go with $150 range I think this was 150 $200 this Bushnell this is a great rangefinder comes with a nice little case I recommend you put your rangefinder in its case and have some extra batteries for it you can go to your local hardware store and get the appropriate batteries but you're going to want to have batteries with your rangefinder just in case it quits and my experience when the batteries go dead it just quits all at once and stops working so you want to have those a battery in your backpack just throw it I have a little bag of batteries that I just keep in my backpack all the time to go to various things they run the microphones I have an extra camera battery stuff like that throw an extra rangefinder battery in there as well I went over my crossbow accessories in a different video feel free to watch that video if you're interested in such things now how to use a rangefinder pretty straightforward I can tell you there isn't a lot to it on the top there's a button and it has an arrow pointing in the right direction what you don't do is look in the lens and then push the button and point at yourself and have this laser shoot you in the chin or whatever that that's not going to work it's got a little arrow on it this one does the end with only one lens is the end you look through so you're just gonna look through it first then push the button push it a button the first time turns it on pushing the button the second time will send out a laser beam out to the item that I was looking at and it will when it bounces back instantaneously it will calculate that distance there very easy to use there's really not anything to it it's just gonna give you a number if you have trouble seeing that number because you're looking at the grass you're looking at the ground or whatever or it's getting dark you can look up and actually read the data by looking at the sky if the sky is still illuminated you can up a little bit and still see what yardages were calculated using a rangefinder now you might notice that it gives you two numbers and might you might notice that it gives you a number like it might say 20 yards and then below that say something like 22 yards usually these range finders anymore most of them have angle of declination calculated in here so the angle what it does is it basically if you're in a tree stand looking down ranging something at 20 yards you it might say that that item is 20 yards away but because of the angle of elevation because you're looking down at a 6 degree of angle or something like that it might actually be a different distance in other words you might want to shoot as though it is only 18 yards away or 15 yards or what-have-you doesn't seem to make an awful lot of difference in my experience if it says 30 yards but shoots like 20 you want to use your 20 yard reticle on your scope now how do we use it when we're in the field hunting now ideally what we do with these things is the deer is coming in to a food plot that's feeding I use the rangefinder I calculate exactly the distance that that deer is away and then I use my crossbow to shoot that deer at exactly that distance using the reticles in the scope that's ideal and I've done that a couple of times I have not done that every time and it isn't something that you're gonna have the luxury of doing every time especially in tree stand hunting if you're in a blind that's one thing but if you're in a tree stand it's hard to get all that movement around and at the same time not scare that deer not alert that deer so to avoid that what you do is you sit in your tree stand ahead of time and use the rangefinder look around there and sort of pick out those spots and make sure you have them memorized okay this tree is 20 yards away so the deers by that tree I'm gonna shoot on my 20 yard reticle on the other hand if it's on the other side of that tree I'll shoot as though it's 25 yards if it's on this side I'll shoot as always 15 yards that's the way to do it make sure you have a good feel for your entire area ahead of time that way wherever the deer travel you'll be able to take that shot and know ahead of time how far away that deer is now I can't stress this enough use this when practicing to you don't guess when you're practicing go out there you can mark spots in your yard no problem and know the yardage is ahead of time that's fine but make sure that you are shooting a hacker when you're practicing I use this every time when I'm practicing I range fighting the target make sure that form I see I am exactly 20 yards or I'm exactly 10 yards or exactly 30 yards so that I'm taking those proper shots there's no point in siting in your crossbow unless you know those distances because you'll be sighting it in wrong so you want to make sure they use one of these when you say it in your crossbow or at a minimum you get a long tape measure measure out those yardages but definitely know your distances when you are practicing now in the tree stand some people to avoid all that extra movement they get little gadgets where they can mount this little device on the crossbow so that it's mounted right above the scope that way you can look through this push the button you can check the rangefinder without moving around and all that sort of thing and then you can take the shot by looking through the scope I don't like to do that number one because that means in order to use the rangefinder I got to have to swing across go around get all that extra movement with a crossbow ahead of time I'm trying to measure out my distances ahead of time so I don't like to do it for that reason especially when I can just sort of memorize them all with those little landmarks ahead of time any other reason I don't like to do that as I mount my GoPro on the scope of the crossbow so that's I've done another video on that as well how to mount that on here but basically the GoPro camera is my backup camera I use that in case I can't get the the DSLR on the deer or whatever I like to have the GoPro there just because it records everything nicely so I use the GoPro I have that mounted on the scope so mounting this on the scope wouldn't work for me but that's something to consider if you think that that would aid you and your hunting that's the way to do it now what about shooting out of a blind what if you're hunting out of a blind you're looking over your food plot it does get a little tricky using one of these looking out over a nice flat food plot because you don't have trees in the food plot you don't have rocks typically I've removed all those rocks and went to great lengths to remove all those rocks when I was planning the food plot you could go so far as to put rocks in your food plots you can do that you can look at various Tufts of grass this thing picks them out really really well I haven't had too much trouble with it you can look at a clump of flowers I've had theirs down in the well pad food plot there was a little clump of black-eyed Susans and I wasn't range-finding those and was able to do it that way and then you just know that if the deers next to that he's 25 yards out if he's on the other side of that he might be 30 if he's on closer to you than humph of flowers and he might be 2015 or whatever what have you but you get that understood ahead of time and again in the blind you can use one of these without too much they're not too bad I can sit there in a blind and use this without spooking to hear they don't you know I sit the back of the blind so I could do that on that note one other great use for a rangefinder is to measure the size of your food plot you can stand on one end of the food plot use the rangefinder to calculate the number of yards to the other and the food plot then you can do the same thing for the whip that helps you when you calculate your line your fertilizer your seed and then when you're calculating your overall acreage on your property that you're devoting to food plots these things are awesome for that so in the summer time I leave this in a ranger so I have a handy so I'd go out and calculate things like that so that's a just another little tip now like I said at the beginning of this video don't guess you have to have a rangefinder you really got to know your distances when you are crossbow hunting there is no replacement for a good valuable tool like this in my opinion this is an indispensable tool for a crossbow hunting you really got to have one of these with that in mind I can tell you last night I was down in the hemlocks down below me here way down at the other end of the property like almost to the bottom end of the property the hemlocks is really quite a ways away from the food plots I was down in there when I got there I went I used the rangefinder to calculate all the distances ahead of me this is a tree stand that I moved earlier and on our Facebook page I talked about that this tree stand is set up it's in a great location it's actually the tree stand location where I shot my first crossbow buck that is a video you can watch here on YouTube if you're interested in it we put up a mock scrape branch there along a deer trail 20 yards or so out in front of me and I went through and cleared out shooting lanes everything was set up perfect when I forgot to the tree stand I got everything set up got the camera set up looking out over that trail and used the rangefinder and I marked all my distances I was very confident that I knew what those distances were everything was set up for success sure enough like they do deer came in behind me for whatever reason and they came in from off the neighbor's property running in behind me I had four doze come in the fourth doe wandered in wasn't running nothing no problems with that. I looked I had plenty of time to look didn't have time to get therangefinderout but I looked at it I thought this is a comfortable 30 yard not a problem she came through along that trail I gave her a light grunt and got her to stop perfect she wasn't even looking at me she wasn't completely alert she knew something was going on and she had stopped for just a second I took up what I thought was a setup of a shot a perfect thirty hard shot and sure enough that deer ran off and I knew right from the get-go that something went wrong something wasn't right the reason I know that I mentioned this before I tried to watch my arrow go through the scope in this case course I had luminox on here and you can see that lumenok go through there I try to watch that to see the impact of the shot with a crossbow I try to keep my eyes open watching it through the scope sort of train myself worked on that it's not something that's easy to do but I try to do that and I watched that arrow go and I never saw the lumenok go out usually as that arrow passes through a deer you're gonna see the lumenok go out that did not happen here this was the first time ever had a complete mess and I know that it was a complete mess because looking at that arrow made it very obvious there was not hide nor hair of deer on that arrow there was no blood whatsoever no hair no sign of hitting a deer a no odor of this actually touching a deer the only smell on this entire arrow was the broad head smelled like dirt when I had pulled it down to the dirt that was it so it went straight into the dirt and you can see from the shot I clearly missed her she ducked a little bit but it went right over her back now why did that happen because I didn't use my rangefinder on that area wasn't anticipating deer coming in behind me I was looking out in front of me and looking at the deer behind me was a whole different scenario right the deer behind me I thought that was a 30-yard shot I was holding my scope as though it was a 30-yard shot Bungie and I took a 30-yard shot but unfortunately that beer was 20 yards away not 30 yards and that difference of ten yards made a significant difference in terms of where I was aiming I actually was aiming over her back period so I didn't have a chance of shooting that deer had I been using the 20-yard pin the 20-yard radical I would have been I'd have a deer down already so you have to know your distances I'm lucky and I'm so thankful that I didn't have to spend the night looking for a deer that I wasn't going to find that I didn't Munda shoot that deer high or whatever else and end up wounding a deer or anything like that but that shows you how important distances are to crossbow hunting that shows you and me how important using your rangefinder at a time is well I certainly hope you found some use in this video hope you enjoyed it make sure you subscribe if you like death by Bungie check out the Facebook page and like the Facebook page for updates there as well and check out our Twitter feed that's a lot of fun too if you have any other questions let me know and until next time all hail Bungie second-stage number one
