New York State Bird - Eastern Bluebird
As far as I am concerned, a big part of gardening also concerns birding. I always say there is a connection between plants, animals, and people. If you have been gardening for any period of time, you can appreciate the wisdom of that statement. I am not sure why, but today I was thinking about our state bird in NY, the Eastern Bluebird. If you're out in the garden and you happen to spot a bluebird, you're lucky. It is a sight and/or sound you'll not soon forget. For those of you who have a fascination with the bluebirds, and would like to know more, read on for some interesting facts... The bluebird was adopted as the State bird in 1970. The Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis, is a medium-sized thrush. Adult males are blue on top, with a reddish-brown throat and breast, and a white belly. Females have paler coloring. The eastern bluebird is traditionally found in open woodlands, meadows, farmlands and orchards. They usually nest in tree cavities, but many people also provide special nesting boxes along fence rows for bluebirds, to supplement their natural nesting cavities.
