About Canajoharie, NY
Canajoharie lies on the Mohawk river near Amsterdam, New York, in the Capital District region. The Erie Canal runs just alongside the town, as does the New York State Thruway. Canajoharie was originally a Mohawk Indian villiage, as the name suggests. The Mohawks aligned with the British in the Revolutionary War, and had to forfeit their land after the British Army's defeat. In 1891 Beech-Nut was founded in Canajoharie, and was the largest industry there for over 100 years. Places to visit in Canajoharie include Wintergreen Park and Gorge, as well as the Canajoharie Library and Art Gallery. Susan B. Anthony, women's rights pioneer, and Myron Grimshaw, of the Boston Red Sox, both lived in Canajoharie.
