The 7.5 MAIN Advantages to SaaS vs. a Hosted Solution

If you find yourself losing information because it lives in multiple locations or is stuck in email, you may want to look into a Software as a Service (known as SaaS) based solution. The platform is easier to use than you might think. Some of the immediate advantages of SaaS over a hosted solution (such as Microsoft SharePoint) are:     * Ease of use, no external hardware or software download is required.     * Don't need an IT team     * Can be deployed in minutes and workers can be fully functional in days     * Much more cost effective than traditional collaboration software     * Access from remote locations and even your mobile phone If you haven't taken a hard look at utilizing SaaS for your firm, here are 7 OVERWHELMING reasons that will save you Time, Profits, Efficiency and Productivity… 1. No Install Required One of the biggest advantages of SaaS, is that it does not require you to install anything onto your computer. It will run straight from your Browser, you just log into your SaaS service provider's website. With no initial software to install, when you inevitably upgrade your computer - all you need is your browser. Your data is stored on your SaaS server providers website and kept absolutely safe. The majority of SaaS is not browser specific, and will tend to work with any of the major web browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc). 2. No Upfront Costs Because the subscription fees can be paid on a monthly basis, and without the need to purchase the software licenses outright - it is easier to budget for a SaaS solution. This allows you to more easily pass the monthly costs through an operating budget. 3. Lower Cost of Entry and TCO Elimination of capital expenditures and dramatic reduction of IT salaries is another major advantage. With a SaaS solution, you don't need an in-house server, and all the overhead that goes with a server. As you may be aware, typical server needs include: expensive software updates, patches applied, routine maintenance and multiples of problems fixed. 4. No Maintenance Fees You don't have to pay for upgrades or software maintenance. With an SaaS solution, everything is included in your monthly fee. 5. No Commitment Your vendor will be responsible for making sure the software is up to date with all the latest industry trends. If the solution stops meeting your needs, you can cancel your subscription and move to another service provider. 6. Not Platform Specific It does not matter which computer or operating system you run. Whether you use Windows, Apple or Linux - all you need is a web browser. 7. Automatic Upgrades You will always have the latest version whenever you log into your SaaS account, due to the fact updates and upgrades are provided automatically. You will never need to worry about your software becoming obsolete and unsupported by the company you purchased it from. This also means that the SaaS provider is able to quickly make changes within a matter of hours if an error is found in the software. 7.5 Access Your Data Anywhere One of the greatest advantages of SaaS, is the freedom it offers you to work when and where you choose. All of the data you use within the software is stored on the servers of the SaaS provider. Log into your account wherever you are in the world and access it instantly. Most importantly, it ensures your data is safer than it would be, than being stored on your computer or external drive. --- Ovate Software, located near Albany, NY, is an industry leader providing an on-demand system that revolutionizes the automation processes for staffing and recruiting companies. Your Router Might Not be as Protected as You Think...

So, You Think YOUR Router is Secure? You Might Not be as Protected as You Think… Remember Samy Kamar(also known as JS.Spacehero)? In October of 2005, Samy Kamkar went looking for new friends on MySpace. Hedeveloped a worm that propagated across the MySpace social networking site. See this new story:Secure Your Router Amongst other things, it was known as the Samy worm.At the time of release, it gained significant media attention. Within just 20 hours of its October 4, 2005 release, over 1 Million users had activated the worm, making Samy one of the fastest spreading viruses of all time. Samy Kamkar entered a plea agreement on January 31, 2007 to a felony charge. The action resulted in Kamkar being sentenced to three years probation, 90 days community service and an undisclosed amount of restitution. So, what does that have to do with routers?  He is now out of probation, and apparently not changing his mischievous and damaging ways… He is currently warning about new dangers that he is creating. This time his sights are set on routers. Almost all businesses that have more than one computer connected to the internet use a router to handle this traffic. Typically, they are cheap to buy and easy to install. In one sense, a router is nothing more than a very simple computer that does one thing very well - and usually doesn't require any interaction with a person. Samy Kamar is now creating ways to infiltrate routers, and bend them to his use. So what could he do exactly? Chances are, he could… disable them change the wireless settings so someone not in the office could get access to your network. install programs on the router that would let people infiltrate your networks, and steal data or bend computers to their uses he could also pinpoint the exact location of your router at your office Yes, this has horrifying possibilities - as this kind of information was never available before without your permission. And we're not sure how he's going to do it just yet... So, how do you protect yourself? Be sure to change the default password that came with your router to a unique one you know, and you will have a better chance of locking Samy out. Please consult your router vendor's website for additional instructions. Adobe releases critical update TODAY!

Adobe is releasing an update to its Acrobat and Reader programs on January 12, 2010 to address critical security issues. Why is this important? A vulnerability in Acrobat and Reader was discovered by hackers and exploited by them. It causes computers to crash and to allow hackers to put dangerous programs on users' computers. Symantec and other anti-virus vendors can't protect against it at this time. You may be told that your computer is protected by IT personnel, but they don't have the full story. While you may be protected (not guaranteed) with computers using Vista and Windows 7 if you open an existing PDF, your computer offers no protection when opening up a PDF on a website without this patch.  This vulnerability also affects all non-Windows computers. Acrobat and Reader are used to view PDF's. These files are becoming more important as a way of moving and storing documents. More people use these programs everyday. Also, even if you don't use the program, it may have been installed on your computer at the factory. What to do. In the program, click on help and then click on check for updates. You can click on Help and About to check your version. You will want to be on Reader version 8.1.7 or 9.2 and Acrobat version 8.1.7. You can update early to the current version. I highly recommend that all uses be on the current version of these programs. After updating, you will be protected against this vulnerability. Check back with us if you have any questions. - Todd Anderson OvateSoftware.com
