The town of Montezuma, NY is located in the western section of Cayuga County on the New York State Barge Canal. Part of the Auburn metro area, Montezuma was officially established in 1859. It lies 47.4 miles from Rochester and was named for the famous Aztec ruler in Mexico. The land, originally part of the Cayuga Indian reservation, was blessed with several natural salt springs. As a result, salt production was one of the town's earliest industries. Some important businesses in Montezuma today include Cook's Construction & Restoration Consultants and Kristies Restaurant. A popular Montezuma walking tour takes the visitor along the path of the Erie Canal. Starting at Memorial Park on Dock Street, major stops on this tour include the Cayuga & Seneca Canal Junction, Lock 11, dry dock area, Lock 62, the Richmond Aqueduct and the paper mill. The Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, a favorite of outdoor enthusiasts, lies at the north end of Cayuga Lake.
