Mold Awareness

Did you know that there are over 100,000 different types of mold in the world?  Some can be very helpful to people such as yeast and penicillin while others can cause severe health problems.  Water intrusion into a home or business is one of the most common causes of mold growth within a home or business.   As we all experienced Hurricane Sandy on Long Island, most of us found out first hand what it was like to have water intrude our home/business.  What made Hurricane Sandy's damage even worse for most, was that salt water flooded our homes and businesses.  Salt water is considered category 3 contaminated and can potentially have sewage, pesticides, oil, chemicals and other contaminates in it.  Anything that comes into contact with this type of contamination is most likely not going to be salvageable including wood floors, sheet rock, carpets, furniture, upholstery, ext.  Water mitigation should begin as soon as possible to prevent mold growth from occurring.  Mold begins to develop within 72 hours of a water damage.  Although you may not see mold it does not mean its not there.  In most cases restoration companies like Servpro of the East End will recommend an industrial hygienist prior to mitigation.  An industrial hygienist will take samples and test  to determine what type of mold is growing in the home/business and create a protocol on how to mitigate it.  This protocol is then handed to a restoration company who will then carry out the process of mitigation.  Please keep in mind it is always a conflict of interest to use a company who states that they do testing as well as mitigation.  It's like having a mechanic look at a car prior to a purchase and the same mechanic owns the car dealership.  If a water intrusion occurred in your home/business contact Servpro of the East End for a free evaluation/estimate.
