About Romulus, NY
Romulus, a town in central Seneca County, is situated in the Finger Lakes region northwest of Ithaca, NY. The area was originally home to the Cayuga and Seneca Indian tribes. Unfortunately, punitive actions taken by visiting Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century drove many of these native Americans away from their homeland. Later named by a lover of the classics after the mythical founder of Rome, Romulus today is home to several important businesses, including the Lakeshore Winery and Webb's Technical & Agricultural Services. Major educational institutions in the area include the Romulus Central School, Odessa Montour Central School and the Waterloo Mennonite School. Romulus is also the location of the New York Chiropractic College. One point of interest is the former Seneca Army Depot. Built during World War II and used until after the Gulf War, it was for years one of Romulus' major employers. One former resident is notable today for the diary he maintained during 1856-1857. Portions of "Romulus Revisited: Extracts from the Diary of Henry McLafferty, Jr." are available online from the Rochester Public Library.
