About Rose, NY

Rose, a town in the interior section of Wayne County, NY, was named for Robert S. Rose, one of its earliest settlers. At times known variously as "Valentine," "Albion," and "Rose Valley," Rose is located west of Syracuse. It was first settled about 1805 and created as a town in 1826 from the Town of Wolcott. At 33.9 square miles, Rose today is home to nearly 900 families, and one of its local attractions is Sodus Creek, which flows northward through Rose on its way to Sodus Bay. Some local Rose businesses include Muraj Fine Dining Take Out and Paradox Cycle. The Myers Community Hospital is located about 10 miles away in Sodus, and SUNY College at Oswego is only 29 miles away at Oswego, NY. A popular local destination is the Rose Free Library, which houses 10,205 books, 18 audio materials and 504 video materials. Rose is of particular interest for the fact that, about the year 1840, its local inhabitants were taken with the notion that a large treasure of jewels and gold had been buried at some undisclosed location in the town. This idea spurred a large number of nocturnal excavations, but in spite of all the earnest effort, no one to this day has ever uncovered the bounty.
