Tough winter

There is no doubt that this has been a tough winter. Most would say the worst we have had in years. The snow keeps piling up and it doesn't help that it comes after the worst couple of years,Financially,we have all seen. However i am an optimist, as most business owners have to be, and do see the light.      The market is picking up as well as consumer confidence so we are gearing up to help people of all shapes and sizes help spend their tax returns on much needed repairs around the house. So update, innovate and relate that rebate and help out your local contractor. peace

Customers sometimes their own worst enemy

After twenty years in the business and countless remodeling projects under my belt i a still shocked at how with all the information out there about how to hire a contractor, people still decide to hire a non licensed/ non insured contractor, due to price.        They see the numbers and say how can their be such a price difference, this guy is ripping us off. The reality is that as a "on the radar" contractor we have major expenses from liability insurance, workmans comp and corporate and payroll taxes. All these items add up to at least 30-50% of my overall business costs before profit.        The customer in turn gets a contractor that will be covered for problems that may occur during a project and as we all no even a small problem becomes big        We literally cant afford to give you that price and you cant afford it either. Here is why Example: #1        Your having a large door and window job done. The agreement goes well because you know the contractor from the area, he is cheap and has had no complaints from the people you talked to.       He starts the job and all is going well but a previous owner of the house ran a wire in a completely illegal manner and isn't seen as important by the helper when putting in the new door.A nail goes through the wire and causes a short in the lights which nobody can find. Option 1:        A licensed electrician has to be called in and traces down the line, the door has to be ripped out and re done as well as the line. the contractor says he is not responsible for hidden problems behind walls so you are charged for all the additional repairs. You say but i hired a professional to do the right job and i am not paying for it        Turns out....his helper just started and is illegal himself so will work for very little.  He is not actually licensed so he doesn't know his or your legal rights and bails off the job before it costs him any more money. You are stuck with an unfinished job,an electrician who comes to you for the funds anyway and if doesnt get his money will put a mechanics lean on your property (completely legal)  Option #2:               The same scenario but the line is so old it never trips the breaker and cause a fire.It is a small smoldering fire that is handled by the fire dept without major damage but your house has suffered smoke damage and you cant get rid of the smell.        You ask the builder to take care of it but he has no insurance and cannot afford to get in a smoke damage restoration co or afford the labor himself. He bails from the job or even worst does a half fast job to get out of there before you realize the smell wont go away. Answers?........ some simple protections for both will do. Hire contractor with both license and insurance.ask to see copies Go for the middle bid on any job over $1000 Ask for a detailed written contract with some language that protects both you and him The bottom line is that even licensed and insured guys like me have been there during a problem due to an honest mistake. But i Know my rights as well as yours and know that running from a job is never the answer.
