Waterville is located in Oneida County, New York. At the 2000 census the population was 1,721. The area was first settled in 1792 and was then known as "The Huddle." In 1808, the settlement took the name of Waterville. A gang of horse thieves called the Loomis Gang operated out of Waterville in the mid nineteenth century and there are stories of the ghosts of the family haunting the Nine Mile Swamp a mile south of town. Waterville is also home to the Waterville Triangle Historic District which is one the National Register of Historic Places. Other area attractions include Village Park, Waterville Creek, and the Waterville Historic Society. Waterville is served by the Waterville Central School District. Waterville businesses include Mirror Image and Hotel Waterville. Famous residents include merchant Frank Lusk Babbott, founder of Eastman Kodak George Eastman, and lawyer and soldier Charlemagne Tower.
