When Your Key Will Not Go Into the Lock

Your house locks are usually made of a cheaper grade of metal than are the nicer commercial locks.  As a result, the key holes take on water and form a thin layer of corrosion on the cylinder and tumblers. No, there is nothing stuck in the key hole.  The little "thingies" you see in the lock are tumblers.  Just shoot WD-40 into your locks three or four times a year or when needed.  While you are at it, lubricate the latches.

Your Business's Back Door Must Have a Storeroom-Style Lock!

If your rear commercial door has a locking lever on it that can be left unlocked, then you may be in physical danger.  This is because you may assume the door is locked when it is, in fact, unlocked.  You do not want somebody walking in on you, especially homeless people who are camping out in the woods behind you! Nor do you want to be robbed at gunpoint early in the morning when you are alone in your business. The proper lock to use on your rear door is not the office (entry) lever that has an interior locking button --  the one to use is the storeroom lock.  The storeroom lock is made to always stay locked.  The outside part of the lever does use a key which simply retracts the lock latch, enabling a person to enter with a key.  However, when the door closes, there is no danger that it will close in the unlocked position.  Of course, you will want to add a latch guard to further protect your door against burglary. Yes, there is some inconvenience in having an "always-locked-lock", especially when employees are carrying out trash or going out for a smoke.  If you do use a storeroom lock, never let your employees place blocks of wood in the jamb to keep the door open!  This could cause expensive damage to your hinges, door, and door frame.
